How does online publishing differ from traditional publishing?

Today we begin to answer the second question in our “When it comes to publishing–First thing first” series. As I write this series I’m trying to provide a clearer explanation of your current publishing options, especially in light of the disruptive changes now taking place in all publishing industries–not just books.

If you read my post about the North Carolina Writers Network Fall Conference, it’s still pretty obvious that many of us authors still prefer the traditional publishing route vs. self-publishing. And, in all honesty, who can blame us? Self-publishing your book through an online site means less marketing visibility, it requires more work on the part of you, the author, and can actually cost you money. Where’s the fun in that?

While I’ll agree that self-publishing may not be fun, I do know that it can be a viable option as you consider your publishing alternatives. Additionally, online publishing can present several advantages–some of which we covered in our previous article.

Traditional publishing has its own set of advantages as well, so here’s what we’ll be discussing over the next few days as we compare online self-publishing to traditional publishing.

1. “I’m published!” vs. “You’re what? “–Recognition, stigma, and obscurity.
2. Getting your book in the door.
3. What’s mine vs. what’s yours.
4. The controlling factor.
5.
Pay me now, pay me later. Or, never pay me at all.
6. Marketing and beyond.

Since my experience is primarily in the self-publishing world, I’m calling on some published authors and traditional publishing experts to help with all the facts.

Until next time–Keep Publishing!
