I’ll Be Speaking At The Next Apex Writers Guild Meeting, Tuesday, March 23rd
Self-publishing isn’t for everyone, that’s for sure. However, the recent advances in Internet and book printing technologies have permanently reshaped the book publishing landscape. These days anyone can be their own book publisher and distributor.
And there, of course, lies the rub. Doing it all yourself requires time and commitment, and sometimes you’ll also need a fair amount of cash. Although you may just want to be an author (don’t we all!), many successful self-published authors also act as the editor, writing analyst, marketing manager, publicist, web designer, and accountant for their book! That’s a lot of hats you’ll be wearing, and if you’re not strong in some of these areas you may need to find an expert to assist you–or take the time to properly learn that side of the publishing business.
However, if you do decide to go this route the great thing is that you’ll know your book and your book’s market better than anyone else, and you’ll directly reap the rewards of your success. During my years at Lulu I worked with many authors that fulfilled their lifelong passion in this way, and although they won’t tell you it was easy, they will tell you it was worth it.
And isn’t that enough?
So, although self-publishing may not be for everyone, it may be right for you. Or, you may want to learn more to weigh your options before you jump in–which is highly recommended!
