I’ll Be Speaking At The Raleigh Entrepreneurs Organization On Wednesday, April 7th.
As I highlighted during my talk at last week’s SEA Conference, small business leaders, entrepreneurs and consultants can often benefit from writing and publishing a book. I’m honored to once again be discussing this subject at the Raleigh Entrepreneurs Organization this Wednesday from 6-7:30pm, and I look forward to seeing you there.
The world of publishing has changed drastically over the last few years, and the truth is that anyone can get their book out the door. But as an entrepreneur, a book can help you accomplish three strategically important business goals. First, it can help you establish credibility. By publishing a book you’ll have something concrete to show about your expertise and services. Plus, a book says much more than a business card, flows much better than a website, and is more fun to read than a resume!
Second, a book can help you extend your visibility. No matter how hard you try you can’t be everywhere at once, nor will you be able to effectively communicate your credentials to all potential clients. A book tells your story–often better than you can tell it in casual conversation–and allows you to touch a wider audience than is humanly possible. Your audience can carry your story around with them, and even share your book with new customers.
Third, a book can bring in supplemental revenue. For example, your business may presently serve only a local market, but it’s possible that your expertise can be of value to those outside of your region. Although a book may not replace your service, potential clients outside of your existing market–and possibly even world-wide–may be attracted to your book, which will create a revenue stream that you didn’t originally consider.
If you have your own business, think about how a book can affect your success. It doesn’t matter if you consider yourself to be an “author” or not. What’s important, however, is that you spend some time thinking about what it is about your skills, knowledge, or experience that will drive the three business goals I described above. The mechanics of publishing–and even writing–are getting easier every day. Still have questions? Email me or give me a call and we can talk about it more.
Hope to see you Wednesday night, and until next time– keep publishing!

Hi! my name is Henry Hutton, and I'd like to welcome you to my new website--PublishandSell.com. I'm one of the founding members of Lulu.com--the world's leading online publishing site, and served as their Online Community Director, Director of Operations and Customer Service, and Product Manager for their Lulu Studio online book-building tool. During my time at Lulu I helped hundreds of authors navigate the often confusing world of self-publishing. Not surprisingly, when we started Lulu in 2003 people referred to our free online publishing as a scam.
